AskOne for Zoom

Last updated 1 October 2026

AskOne is live audience Q&A. Inside a Zoom meeting it puts a ranked wall of questions on the shared screen, and everyone else asks and upvotes from the Apps panel on their own machine — with no account and no sign-up. This guide covers adding the app, using it during a meeting, and removing it.

Before you start

Adding the app

  1. Open the Zoom App Marketplace and search for AskOne, or select Apps in the Zoom desktop client and find it there.
  2. Select Add. Zoom shows what the app may do. AskOne asks for one permission, zoomapp:inmeeting — permission to run in a meeting you are already in — and nothing else. Approve it to continue.
  3. Zoom hands you back to AskOne, which discards the installation parameters and opens the panel. There is no account to connect and no password to enter: AskOne is never issued a Zoom access token and never calls Zoom’s API for your data.
  4. AskOne is now in the Apps panel of any meeting you join. You add it once, not per meeting.

Using it during a meeting

If you are hosting

  1. In the meeting, select Apps on the toolbar and open AskOne. The panel opens on a screen headed AskOne in Zoom.
  2. Select Start Q&A after reading the consent line. The room opens with a six-character code and a name based on your local start time. It allows up to 100 participants and always uses AI moderation. If you already have an open room, you can return to it, or confirm a new start after seeing which room will close and how many questions it holds. Cancelling keeps the existing room open.
  3. Select Present the wall. AskOne switches to the projector view — the ranked queue in large type, with no ask box and no identity attached to it.
  4. Select Share wall and invite everyone. Zoom shares that wall with the meeting and invites every participant to open AskOne in their own panel. The presenter controls then leave the screen, so the call sees the wall rather than your buttons.
  5. Return to the host panel to review waiting questions with Approveor Hide. It shows the first ten waiting questions; after each decision the next one can appear. If the AI cannot run, questions wait for you.Close room ends participation. Closing and starting a room also offer to keep the wall you are currently presenting.

Change room sits beside those controls while the room is in the panel and before you present it, and takes you back to the start screen or picker. Once the wall is shared the presenter controls leave the screen by design, so to point the panel somewhere else after that, close AskOne and open it again from the Apps panel.

To use an organization room instead, open askone.org in a browser, sign in and open a room there. In the panel, type its code into Room code or linkand select Open room. A full room link works too, and spaces are ignored. Manage that room from the browser console; a room code alone does not grant host controls in the panel. If Start Q&A is unavailable, this code picker still works.

Keeping your rooms in AskOne

  1. Select Sign up to keep your rooms on your room’s panel, or on the start screen whenever it says you have rooms available to keep. This works from a later meeting too, including when all those rooms are closed, while the rooms still exist.
  2. Zoom does not open links from an app panel, so the panel shows a link with a Copy button and a QR code. Paste the link into a browser, or scan the code with your phone, then create an account or sign in. The link works once, within an hour; New link issues another.
  3. Choose an organization where you can manage rooms. Review the rooms’ names and question counts. Keep moves all your remaining rooms, rather than just the one you are looking at; the page warns before confirmation that an incoming open room will close if the organization is already at its open-room limit.
  4. Confirm the move. Join codes stay the same. Manage the rooms from your organization’s console afterwards; they no longer belong to your anonymous Zoom identity.

Running the room from another screen

Presenting turns the panel into the wall, so the call sees exactly what the panel shows. To launch surveys or approve questions while you present, select Get a link under Run it from another screen before you present. Paste the link into a browser on your second screen, or scan its QR code with your phone, and select Open host controls. The link works once, within 10 minutes, and gives that browser your host controls for 6 hours, so open it only on your own devices. To leave the wall, move your pointer over it and select Stop presenting.

If you are taking part

  1. Accept the invitation the host sends, or select Apps and open AskOne. If someone is already presenting a room, your panel asks the meeting which room that is and joins it by itself — you do not need the code.
  2. Type a question and select Ask. Upvote anyone else’s question with the control beside it, and select it again to take your vote back. One vote per person per question.
  3. Setting a display name is optional; leave it empty to stay anonymous. Names are screened before anyone sees them.
  4. Answer any live survey shown above the questions. Survey answers are final once submitted.
  5. In a moderated room your question waits for review. You can see your own waiting question; nobody else can until it is approved.

If the panel says “Turn cookies on to join this room.” AskOne stores one cookie so that a refresh keeps you the same participant — otherwise every action would look like a new person and one vote could be counted twice. It holds a random value and nothing about you. Without it the room cannot admit you.

Removing the app

  1. Open the Zoom App Marketplace, select Manage, then Added Apps.
  2. Find AskOne and select Remove, then confirm.
  3. AskOne disappears from your Apps panel. Nothing else about your Zoom account changes, and there is no access token for us to revoke, because we were never issued one.

Rooms kept in an AskOne organization remain there when you remove the app. They remain reachable at askone.org. Temporary rooms started without an account follow the automatic closure and deletion below, including if you remove the app. Removal does not send AskOne a deletion request.

Deleting your data

A room started without an AskOne account, in Zoom, Google Meet or ChatGPT, closes automatically 48 hours after it opens, unless you close it sooner. Its questions, votes, participant hashes and display names are deleted 7 days after it closes. Cleanup runs every 15 minutes; when no rooms remain, the anonymous workspace and its keyed user hash are deleted too. Before deletion, Sign up to keep your rooms lets you move all your remaining rooms into an organization after creating an account or signing in, and confirming. Their join codes stay the same, the anonymous workspace and its user hash are removed, and the rooms follow the organization retention policy.

For organization rooms, including rooms you kept from Zoom, closing stops people joining, asking and voting; it does not delete anything, and the room can be reopened. Deleting your workspace deletes everything under it immediately. Room data carries a retention date of 30 days after the room is closed — and we are straight about the gap in our Privacy Policy: the scheduled job that sweeps expired organization rooms is not running yet, so in the meantime we delete on request, promptly. Ask us at support@productcompass.pm and we will.
