Moderation
Every room has one of three moderation settings, chosen when the room is created and changeable at any time. Whichever it is, administrators and moderators can act on any question, and every display name is screened.
The three choices
No moderation
Questions appear on the screen the moment they are asked.
AI moderation (recommended)
An AI reads every question first and hides abuse and spam. Anything it is unsure about waits for you.
What the AI checks
It hides questions that are abusive, vulgar, hostile or harassing, advertising or spam, and empty noise — repeated characters, keyboard mashing, a string of digits.
It never judges whether a question is on topic. That stays yours, and a room ranked by votes already sinks what nobody wants answered.
When it is not confident, or a question uses a word from our short list of offensive words it is known to miss, the question waits for you instead of being hidden.
Human moderation
Every question waits for you or a moderator before anyone sees it.
AI moderation is the default for a new room, and it is included on every plan, within fair use. On the AI setting, the question text and the room’s name and description go to the model; no participant name, cookie or IP address goes with that question. If the organization’s AI allowance for the day runs out, or the AI cannot be reached, new questions wait for a person instead: the console says “AI moderation is paused for today. New questions wait for you.” when the allowance is the reason.
When the AI hides a question, the person who asked it sees “Not accepted in this room.” beside it; nobody else in the room sees it.
Changing it during a session
An administrator can change a room’s moderation before, during or after the session. Open Room settings at the bottom of the room’s console and choose another option under Moderation. AskOne asks you to confirm, and tells you what happens to the questions already there:
- To No moderation: every question waiting for review becomes visible to everyone at once, including on the projector. The confirmation says how many first. New questions then appear immediately.
- To Human moderation: new questions wait for you. Questions already approved, answered, waiting or rejected keep their state.
- To AI moderation: the AI reviews new questions first. Questions already waiting are not re-judged; you still decide them.
Moderators see the room’s setting but cannot change it.
Working the queue
The Questions panel on the room’s console has three views: Moderate, with waiting and approved questions and their controls; Audience view, which shows the questions as the room sees them, in the room’s order; and Answered. Questions that arrive while you are working wait behind a new questions button at the bottom of the screen instead of moving the list under your finger.
- Approve or Reject a waiting question. An approved question reaches the phones and the projector. A question you reject reaches no screen, and cannot be brought back.
- Pin marks an approved question Up next for the whole room; Unpin clears it.
- Mark answered moves a question to the Answered view, for everyone; Mark unanswered moves it back.
- Comment adds one note of up to 1,000 characters, shown under the question as From the host on the phones and the projector. Save comment leaves the question’s status alone; Save and mark answered does both. Edit comment and Remove comment change it later.
- Send back, in an approved question’s … menu, returns it to waiting for review.
Questions the AI rejected
In an AI-moderated room, the questions the AI hides are kept in a collapsed list, Rejected by AI, below the queue. Only moderators and administrators can see it. Approve publishes a question the AI got wrong. Nothing the AI hides is deleted.
Banning a participant
To stop someone taking part, open the … menu on one of their questions, choose Ban participant, and confirm. For 24 hours they cannot ask, vote, set a name or answer surveys in any of your organization’s rooms. Their existing questions and word cloud responses are hidden at once, and stay hidden after the ban ends.
Participants have no accounts, so a ban applies to the browser they took part from — the same anonymous identity that counts their vote once. A banned participant is told they cannot take part right now, and when they can again.
Display names
Every display name is screened by AI before anyone sees it, in every room, whatever its moderation setting; only the name is sent. A name that is not accepted is refused with “That name wasn’t accepted. Try another.” A clearly offensive one is also sanctioned with “That name breaks the rules. Naming is unavailable for 24 hours.” That block covers all of your organization’s rooms, and the person can still ask, vote and answer surveys without a name.
Inviting moderators
A moderator is a member of your organization with the Moderator role. An administrator invites them:
- On the Rooms page, open the organization switcher at the top and choose Manage.
- Open Members and invite them by email address.
- Choose Moderator as their role, and send the invitation.
Once they accept and sign in, they see your organization’s rooms. Every plan includes moderators.
What a moderator can do
- See all of the organization’s rooms, and open their consoles and projectors.
- Approve, reject, send back, pin and unpin questions, comment on them, and mark them answered or unanswered.
- Ban a participant.
- Create, launch and close surveys, choose whether their results are shared, and see their results.
- Read a closed room’s Report.
What only an administrator can do
- Create, open, close, reopen, rename, duplicate or delete rooms, and edit their description.
- Change a room’s moderation setting.
- Export a room’s questions or survey results.
- Invite members, and manage billing, the organization’s logo and API tokens.
Rooms themselves are in Open a room.
