Open a room

Last updated 6 October 2026 · All documentation

A room is one session’s Q&A: a six-character join code, a link your audience opens on their phones, and a console where you run it. This guide covers signing in, creating a room, and opening it now or later.

Sign in and your organization

  1. At askone.org, choose Start free to create an account, or Sign in if you have one.
  2. The first time you sign in, AskOne asks you to create an organization, or to choose one you have been invited to. Your rooms, your plan and your team belong to the organization; if you run sessions alone, you are its only member.
  3. You land on Rooms, which lists the organization’s rooms under Live, Upcoming and Past.

Administrators create, open and close rooms. Moderators see the same rooms and run their questions and surveys; see Moderation.

Create a room

  1. Select New room.
  2. Under Name, name the room, in up to 80 characters. Your audience sees it at the top of the room. Left empty, the room is called “Q&A”.
  3. Starts (optional) takes a date and time. It is shown with the room as information only: a room never opens by itself.
  4. Under Moderation, choose who reads questions before the room sees them. AI moderation is selected for you; the three choices are below.
  5. Choose Open now to take questions straight away, or Save as upcoming to prepare the room for later. Entering a start time makes Save as upcoming the default button.

The room then opens on its console: the join code and link, the questions, the surveys, and Room settings, where an administrator can change the name, the moderation and the room’s description at any time. The description is for the people who run the room; the audience does not see it.

Prepare a room for later

An upcoming room already has its code, link and QR code, so you can put them on a slide or in an invitation. Nobody can join yet: the link says “This room hasn’t opened yet”, with the start time if you set one, and switches to the room by itself once it opens. In the meantime you can edit its details and draft its surveys.

When the session starts, open the room’s console and select Open now. An upcoming room you no longer need can be deleted: Delete room is in the room’s … menu, asks you to confirm, and removes its draft surveys too. Only upcoming rooms can be deleted.

An organization can hold up to 20 upcoming rooms. They do not count toward the open-room limit below.

How many rooms can be open

When every open slot is in use, Open now is unavailable until you close a room. Closed rooms do not count, and you can reopen one later when a slot is free. Every plan includes Q&A, surveys, the projector, moderation and moderators; plans differ in capacity and branding, and belong to the organization rather than to a person. See Pricing, and Invite participants for how many people each room admits.

You can also start a temporary room without an account, from Zoom or ChatGPT.
