Invite participants

Last updated 6 October 2026 · All documentation

Your audience needs a phone or laptop with a browser: no account, no app, nothing to install. They join with the room’s link, its six-character code or its QR code.

The link, the code and the QR code

Every room’s link is askone.org/r/ followed by its join code. Both are at the top of the room’s console, under Join code.

To type the code instead of scanning, people go to askone.org/r/ and add the six characters. Upper or lower case both work, and codes never use I, L, O, S, 0, 1 or 5, so there is nothing to mistake for something else.

You can send the link before the session. Until you open the room it says “This room hasn’t opened yet”, and it switches to the room by itself once you do.

The projector view

Select Open projector on the room’s console. It opens in a new tab: put that tab on the screen behind you, or share it in your call. The projector shows the join code in large type with its QR code, the top questions ranked by votes, and any live surveys. It has no controls, so nothing you click lands on the wall, and it is always dark, whichever theme you use.

The projector needs no sign-in, so it can run on any computer. It shows only what the whole room can see: approved questions, never anyone’s waiting one. It updates by itself.

What joining looks like

  1. Someone opens the link or scans the code, and the room opens in their browser.
  2. They type a question of up to 300 characters and select Ask. If it has to wait for review, it shows as Waiting for the host: they can see their own waiting question, and nobody else can until it is approved.
  3. They upvote the questions they want answered, and can take a vote back. Top ranks the questions by votes and Recent by time; Answered collects the ones you have marked answered.
  4. They answer any live survey shown above the questions. An answer cannot be changed once it is sent.

An open room needs one cookie, which holds a random number and nothing else: it keeps a person’s questions theirs and counts their vote once. With cookies switched off, the room asks them to “Turn cookies on to join this room.” Reading a closed room needs no cookie.

Display names

People ask as a guest unless they add a name. They select Guest · add a name under the question box, type up to 24 characters and select Save. The name is shown on their questions; leaving it empty keeps them a guest.

Every name is screened before anyone sees it, in every room, whatever its moderation. A name that is not accepted gets “That name wasn’t accepted. Try another.” A clearly offensive one also stops that person adding a name in your organization’s rooms for 24 hours; they can still ask, vote and answer surveys. More in Moderation.

How many people can join

A participant is counted the first time they take part: ask, vote, set a name or answer a survey. Reading the room does not count. Once a room is full, a newcomer who tries to take part sees “This room is full — it has reached the number of people the plan allows.” Everyone already counted carries on. The limit applies to each room separately, and the console’s Joined figure shows how close you are. A room keeps the limit of the plan it opened under; reopening it applies the organization’s current plan.

Zoom, Google Meet and ChatGPT

In every case, people can also join with the link or the code on their own phones.
